A short pause is made to see the monument of the famous Finnish composer Sibelius, situated in Sibeliuspuisto park. Another important landmark we’ll visit is the Olympic Stadium, designed in functionalist style. The Helsinki Olympic Games were held in 1952.
On our way back to the city center, a photo stop at Oodi Helsinki Central Library allows you to admire a hugely significant site in central Helsinki facing the steps of the Finnish parliament building. The magnificent historical centre is a great example of 19th century architecture. The Senate Square offers a view of the impressive Helsinki Cathedral, which towers above the square and the main building of the Helsinki University, the National Library and the Government Palace. In the middle of the square is a statue of the czar Alexander II. The Uspenski Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church in Northern Europe dominates the eastern skyline of the city center. The nearby Presidential Palace, created by C.L. Engel, was once the residence of the Russian Czar and Grand Duke of Finland on his visits to the town. The Ateneum Art Museum, the Finnish National Gallery, and the contemporary Kiasma art museum are both cultural sites worth seeing. Of course, we cannot miss A. Aalto’s Finlandia Hall, which houses a concert hall and a conference center.

Finland’s high season to travel essentially boils down to what you want. If you’ve ever dreamed of getting lost in a fairy tale, winter, or specifically between December and March, is a fantasy on the planet. What I mean by that is gentle snow under your boots, the Northern Lights gently twirling above, and so quiet that you’ll catch yourself remembering a residue of a world outside. It’s cold, all right—but the kind of cold that beckons you inside, where you sit and spend a night huddled in a blanket, drinking something hot, as the snowflakes descend through the window.
And then the summer, June to August, when Finland becomes absolute stillness. The sun never actually sets, and the time just limps. Natives trek to lakeside cottages, forage in the wild for berries, and soak in saunas as if it were a religious ceremony—because it is. And when you arrive in late summer, September, you’ll discover forests burning with color, a peaceful beauty that is intimate and deep, as if the world is exhaling gently before winter comes back. Finland doesn’t blast or gaudy. It’s soft, soulful, and it lingers with you long after you’re gone.
If you wish to just explore the capital of Helsinki and places close by, a four- or five-day trip is sufficient
